The Hidden Reasons Most Gamification Programs Will Fail

Gamification projects often fail to deliver long-lasting results.

Up to 80% see limited success according to Gartner.

This high failure rate can be discouraging if you're new to gamification. And unsurprising if you've tried gamification without lasting impact.

Why does this happen?

Well, imagine a game you have to play, with rewards that feel pointless and rules you don't care about. Yeah, not exactly a recipe for a good time. That's the trap a lot of "gamification" falls into.

Great games are fun because they're well-designed and engaging. They make you want to play, not force you. Gamification often just takes the "points and badges" stuff from games, without the actual fun part.

So, why does gamification sometimes miss the mark?

  • Just throwing on badges doesn't work: Gamifying something needs a clear goal, like encouraging a new behavior. Just adding points and leaderboards feels pointless without a reason.
  • Tacked-on feeling: Imagine sticking a sticker on a boring textbook and calling it "gamified." Not gonna fly. Gamification needs to be seamlessly woven into the experience.
  • Shiny rewards lose their shine: Getting points and badges might be exciting at first, but it gets old fast. True motivation comes from enjoying the experience itself.
  • No choices, no fun: People like to feel in control. Gamification that forces you to do things just kills the fun.
  • Lost in the points game: Focusing too much on points and leaderboards can make people forget the actual goal. We need to see progress, not just meaningless numbers.
  • Mixed messages: Sometimes, gamifying can reward things we actually don't want people to do. Not cool.
  • Not a game designer? Don't force it: Making a game is an art, not just a tech thing. Just adding game elements to something won't magically make it fun.
  • Rewarding the usual doesn't help: Gamification should be about encouraging new behaviors, not just giving points for what people already do.
  • One-and-done doesn't cut it: Just like any good game, good gamification needs tweaks and adjustments to keep things fresh and engaging.

The key takeaway?

Think fun first!

Great games are successful because they're enjoyable experiences. Gamification needs to capture that same essence.

When done right, with a focus on meaningful goals, engaging experiences, and intrinsic motivation, gamification can truly make a difference.

But remember, it's not just about points and badges - it's about creating something people genuinely want to be a part of.
